Is a New Minecraft Inventory UI on Its Way?

Leaked screenshots of potential Minecraft UI changes

Recent leaks suggest that Bedrock Minecraft might receive some significant visual changes to its inventory and storage UI.

Minecraft Leaks Show Multicolored Inventories

Although technically still being the same game, the Java and Bedrock versions of Minecraft have numerous slight differences. Another difference might soon be the two versions’ UI visuals, according to some recent leaks.

The news comes from KingDark on Twitter/X, who is an addon developer for the Minecraft marketplace. They recently shared a few work-in-progress screenshots dug out from the Bedrock edition of the game. While KingDark has not explained how exactly they’ve got the screenshots, they are a reputable addon developer, so the news should be legit.

In the screenshots, we can see the familiar inventory UI of Minecraft drastically changed. While chests and other inventories still have the usual number of slots, said slots have slightly changed profiles, giving off a more “rounded” appearance to the UI. In addition, the UIs have different colors based on what type of chest or inventory the player has opened. For example, barrels have a brown background, harking to the wood it’s made of. Meanwhile, ender chests have a greenish-blue color to their UI, which is consistent with the overall palette of the block.

Another thing that becomes evident from the leaks is that the item number displays which show how many items are in a stack are also different, showing a gray number on a solid light-gray background. The player’s hotbar also follows the same design principle.

What Do Players Think About the Potential Change?

Fans’ reactions to the alleged changes to the UI did not come late and it’s safe to say opinions were mixed. Many had questions about how the supposed new UI will work. Some were confused if this would be some optional texture pack, while others asked if the changes would affect entity containers (such as minecart chests).

Popular Minecraft YouTuber Phoenix SC even recreated the UI in a modded version of Minecraft to get a feel for what it might look like in the future.

As with any change, there were many concerned people about what this could mean for the flow of the gameplay. Some said it would take time to rewrite years of muscle memory from using the old UI. That’s because the leaked screenshots show the player’s inventory and that of the opened container to be side by side, instead of one above the other. While many don’t mind the color changes, just as many don’t like this shifting of inventories.

Fans suggested Mojang should add a toggle for the vertical/horizontal position of the inventories, keep the old hotbar textures, or just straight up not do anything new to the UI. There is also the “traditions” factor of what we have currently. “If the hotbar texture changes that means the oldest texture in Minecraft will be removed. When the hotbar was added in classic 0.0.19a it used the same texture it uses now meaning a 15.5-year-old texture would be gone,” one fan wrote.

Whether or not these potential changes come to fruition will be revealed in the future. There’s also the possibility this change affects only the Bedrock version of Minecraft and not the Java one. However, Mojang has often listened to players’ feedback, so any UI changes could likely be influenced by the fans’ opinions.
