Minecraft Is Getting Fireflies Soon?

A short post from a Minecraft leaker has ignited the community’s imagination and many are saying that fireflies will be re-added to the game soon.

Leaks Suggest Fireflies Are Returning to Minecraft

Fireflies have become a weird meme in the Minecraft community. Ever since developers Mojang announced they would be adding frogs to the game back in October 2021, fireflies have been a running joke among the players. This is because frogs were initially meant to eat fireflies. However, the latter mob was subsequently removed from the official Minecraft version, because it turns out that fireflies are poisonous to some frogs.

Since then, many fans have been lamenting the disappearance of an otherwise interesting ambient mob. However, Minecraft might actually have fireflies once again in the upcoming updates. According to recent leaks, this could happen as soon as January 8 as a new snapshot will release then.

Popular Minecraft YouTuber Phoenix SC made a video discussing the subject and going over the credibility of the original leaker. According to the YouTuber, there is sufficient evidence that points toward the leaker suggesting that fireflies are coming to the game.

Phoenix SC drew specific attention to the leaker’s post that reads “It’s abysmal what passes for a leak nowadays. Here’s a better for the spring drop,” followed by two pixels – yellow and black. These two pixels were what the old fireflies looked like, just a simple two-pixel model. That shape has itself become a meme within the Minecraft community and according to the YouTuber, this is pretty solid evidence that Mojang will re-add fireflies to the game.

What Do Fans Think?

With any leak comes the flurry of discussion of what the news might entail. According to some, the potentially returning fireflies could be part of a bigger ambiance update with things like better/more flowers, new lighting, and more.

Meanwhile, other fans support the idea of Mojang adding fireflies to Minecraft as a way to raise awareness for the IRL insect, similar to one of the main reasons the devs decided to add bees. Over the past years, fireflies have seen their numbers dwindle as habitats are getting destroyed and substances like pesticides have a negative effect on them.

Of course, there were those fans who looked at the leak in a more humorous way. “Took a few years for Mojang to realize they could just make frogs not eat fireflies, but better late than never,” one commenter wrote.

Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see what Mojang announces to verify if the fans’ assumptions are right or not. That shouldn’t take long as the next Minecraft snapshot will drop on January 8.
