Although Elden Ring has concluded, it seems developers FromSoft are still working on the IP in some ways.

Miyazaki Talks About the Future of Elden Ring

It’s without a doubt that Elden Ring has become one of the most popular games created by FromSoftware. However, despite its expansive story and additional content, such as DLCs, fans still want more of The Lands Between. As such, many have been wondering if the game is going to receive a sequel.

While the developers have not explicitly stated there will be such a thing, none other than director Hidetaka Miyazaki has given hope to fans. In a recent interview with Japanese publication Game Watch, Miyazaki confirmed that the Elden Ring IP could return in another form further down the line.

“At this point, we are not considering developments such as “Elden Ring 2”. However, this does not mean that we are denying the development of the IP “Elden Ring”,” Miyazaki said in the interview (provided with machine translation”. “As for “what will we do then?”, FromSoftware is running multiple projects as usual. There are various variations of projects among them, so we hope you will look forward to them.”

What Could the New Project Be?

While Miyazaki reaffirmed the official statement of FromSoft that a direct sequel of Elden Ring is not coming soon, his words still tease that we might see more from the franchise. Perhaps there could be a new DLS coming sometime in the future. After all, the latest one, Shadow of the Erdtree, didn’t answer every question. While some might say this is just typical storytelling for souls-like games, others posture that the DLC’s ending intentionally left room for the story to continue.

Of course, another possibility is that FromSoft is working not on a new DLC, but rather a spin-off or even prequel to Elden Ring. Perhaps in the future, we might see what caused the downfall of The Lands Between. Some have even suggested that the work on the IP could be an anime or a film, giving us a new form of media to see the game’s world.

It’s important to note that as Miyazaki said, FromSoft is currently working on multiple projects at the same time. Many of them have not been fully announced, which fuels additional speculation on what Elden Ring’s future might hold. This goes hand in hand with rumors that a Bloodborne Remaster is in development.

But it’s still probably best to have cautious optimism on the matter. While Miyazaki’s words may be encouraging, he hasn’t revealed anything definitive so far. He could also be indulging in wordplay to throw us off the scent.
