Popular visual novel Steins;Gate, the original source of the eponymous critically acclaimed anime series, is getting a remake for its 15th anniversary.
Steins;Gate Will Get a Remake
Few visual novels can reach the popularity of Steins;Gate, the 2010 title following the eccentric university student and self-proclaimed mad scientist Okabe Rintarou and his friends. The group accidentally discovers the ability to send phone messages to the past using one of their gadgets, which changes the current world. This in turn plunges Okabe, who is seemingly the only one who has the ability to notice and remember these changes, into a dark world of conspiracy, an evil organization hellbent on controlling the world, and lots of pain and suffering.
Steins;Gate is one of the most critically acclaimed time-travel games, not just in anime, but in all media. It has spawned an equally impressive anime, which is the fourth top-rated anime of all time, according to stats tracking website My Anime List. The show’s IMDB score is equally impressive at 8.8/10.
Spawning numerous other media, such as a spin-off game – Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace, a sequel/prequel (weird time-travel stuff, too long to explain now) – Steins;Gate 0, the franchise has been going strong over the past 14 years. However, for its 15 years since launch, the original game will receive a remake, aptly named STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT. With such a phenomenal track record, the new game has a lot of eyes on it.
What Could Fans Expect from Steins;Gate RE:BOOT?
While there is not much information on what the remake of the original game will offer, the developers 5pb alongside publisher MAGES released a short teaser trailer about it. We can see that the game is scheduled to be released in 2025, although an exact date is yet to be announced. From the trailer, we can also see the original cast of the game, most of which now has redrawn models.
Said new models will be handled by popular anime artist Huke, as further information from Japanese outlet Famitsu stated. Huke also worked on the design and art of the original game. Curiously, the artwork for Hashida Itaru, one of the main characters and roommate of Okabe, doesn’t seem to be changed. It’s currently unknown if his artwork will be updated, but fans noted the fact.
In addition to the updated models of the other characters, Steins;Gate RE:BOOT will also have various story additions. It is not known, however, how exactly these would be incorporated into the game. These could take the form of extra and extended dialogue, more routes and endings, some small side stories, or a combination of all.
It should be noted that this isn’t the first time the developers of Steins;Gate has tried to make a remake/reboot of the original game. In 2018, 5pb released Steins;Gate Elite, and while the game received mostly positive feedback, it also saw some criticism from long-time fans for its use of clips from the anime instead of original art. However, it seems like RE:BOOT does not appear to be falling into similar trappings.
While there’s still more information to be released about the new game, it seems that fans are overall hopeful about the new release.
