Can Star Wars Outlaws Save Ubisoft’s 2024?

Ubisoft's official logo caught fire

Ubisoft’s 2024 hasn’t really been all that great. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has been plagued with controversies and fan displeasure ever since its announcement. Ubisoft did attempt to combat this with even more reveals and promises, but those did not click with fans at all. The entire nation of Japan seemingly took a negative stance towards the game, with calls for improper cultural appropriation and history alterations, among other things.

Recently it was revealed that the company has made another highly unpopular decision – laying off 45 employees, per Bloomberg’s report. While Ubisoft have stated that they will assist the released employees via severance pay and “career-related assistance”, although we have no idea what that might be. More details would have been useful, but currently this is what we have. Regardless, this is troubling news for the studio, as it seems to be very willing to do an unpopular move in times of controversy. Hopefully, this trend will subside in the future, but time will tell.

There is, however, one ray of hope piercings through this cloud of unpleasantness – Star Wars Outlaws. Set to arrive on August 30, it has some pretty interesting features to offer, the biggest one being its highly adaptable graphics. While it’s true you will need quite the rig to run the game on ultra graphics, Ubisoft have committed to the game being accessible to rigs that are not quite yet powered by mini-nuclear cores.

Is Upscaling the Future of Gaming?

Ubisoft have kindly provided the specs needed to run the game, easily put into various categories based on the experience you want to get from the game. The overall idea is to give every single player absolute control over which graphics to enhance and what to downgrade, in order to achieve a reasonable compromise based on the rig that player plays on. This seems like an awesome change on first glance, as game acessibility on different machines is key for any playerbase. Hopefully, this will lead to more people enjoying Star Wars Outlaws.
