A clever modder has implemented the newest Doom guns and glory kill system into the OG 1993 game, and it looks amazing!
Guy Mods Doom: The Dark Ages Guns into the Original Doom
Without a doubt, Doom: The Dark Ages is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year. However, it will be a few more months until the FPS releases on the market. The most diehard fans are eager to jump into the armored boots of the Slayer and are once again replaying Doom Eternal until the next game drops to satisfy their desire to kill hordes of demons. But what if you could actually play Doom: The Dark Ages right now… well, sort of.
While obviously there are still months until the FPS releases, some fans have managed to put assets from the new game into the original Doom as a cool mod. Made by duskredy, the mod is available through this Discord link.
Called Darkfall (perhaps a nod to The Dark Ages?), the mod adds some of the weapons we have already seen in the Doom: The Dark Ages trailers and limited gameplay footage. Players can now use the shield saw, which became iconic from just the trailers alone. However, the modder also added the weird spike launcher, the plasma rifle, and whatever you would call the big skull-crushing spread shot machine gun thing (arguably the most metal AF gun we’ve seen in the trailers so far).
Not only that, but duskredy’s mod also includes a glory kill system, just like the 2016, Eternal, and The Dark Ages games have. And all of these weapons and melee finishers work together seamlessly as if they were always a part of the original 1993 Doom.
How Does This Mod Work?
The way duskredy added the Doom: The Dark Ages guns to the original game is actually quite smart. They used footage from the trailers and gameplay reveals of the newe game and essentially cropped the guns with their full animations. Duskredy then ported these animations to the original Doom (pixelating them very well, mind you, so that it fits the whole old-school Doom aesthetic), and programmed the actual behavior into them.
You should not that if you want to play Darkfall, you’ll need to use the GZDoom client, which adds the vertical look feature to the classic 1993 icon. Other than that, this is the best way to get a preview of The Dark Ages before its spring launch. We wrote an All you need to know about Doom: The Dark Ages article, so give it a read to prepare for the spring release of the game.
