Why Won’t Blizzard Just Make WoW Series?!

WoW's Aleria.

That’s the question on everyone’s mind right now. Blizzard’s one saving grace in recent times has been its cinematics and animation teams, which always deliver banger after banger. Alleria’s latest short story is just the latest example of this trend, but it’s caused quite the rumble online, more so than usual. But why is that?

Well, the answer is quite simple, yet extremely infuriating. Ever since the somewhat disappointing Warcraft movie, fans have been dying for a fully animated full-length movie set in the World of Warcraft (WoW) universe. No CGI, no “character reinventions” and no real-life actors, as strange as that may be. People genuinely want Blizzard’s cinematic crew’s limitless potential to be let loose and bring their beloved story to life.

Blizzard Needs to Listen to the Fans!

And for good reason! As a long time World of Warcraft player myself, I have to admit that the trailers and cinematics are the sole reason that I buy the game anymore. The expansions themselves (especially since Shadowlands) have been pretty mediocre in my humble opinion. I haven’t seen any revolutionary gameplay changes, or any game enhancements per say. But where Blizzard’s game developers failed, the cinematics team delivered.

This is a very interesting and peculiar divide between gameplay and cinematic quality that creates a very intriguing phenomena. Obviously, the short stories and cinematics keep World of Warcraft relevant. But is it in a way Blizzard wants? Absolutely not. Those views rarely transition into actual, long-term players. What does it mean? People are tuning in, they like the content, but don’t transition to playing the game for long. That’s because they go to World of Warcraft hoping the game would match the epicness of the trailers, but something appears to be missing.

It seems to me that those types of viewers really, really want a fully animated movie or series, so why doesn’t Blizzard capitalize on that? Are they waiting for more people to jump on that bandwagon, or are they fearful that the animation team might become overstressed or oversaturated?

Regardless of the reason, the potential for overwhelming success is definitely there, and perhaps this new direction will put some much needed success to Blizzard. There is no reason to leave this area unexplored, considering the heightened interest from the public towards the prospect for such projects.

But tell us what you think! Do you want to see a full animated movie from the Blizzard animation team? What characters would you like it to feature? We’re dying to hear you out, so do leave us a comment or a message!
