One Box on Dust Divides Counter-Strike 2 Community

  • Valve has released a brand new Counter-Strike 2 update that changes several maps
  • One of them is the addition of a single new box on Dust 2
  • The CS2 community seems quite divided about the new change

A single new box on Counter-Strike 2’s Dust 2 that allows CTs to climb the A-site catwalk divides the player base.

Valve Updates a Classic Counter-Strike Map

When it comes to iconic Counter-Strike maps, one might quickly think of Dust 2, the map has been a staple of both casual and professional gameplay for more than 20 years now and it’s arguably become something like a mascot for the entire CS franchise. It’s not rare that even people who haven’t played any of the games from the series can recognize the map.

Designed by David Johnston and first added to Counter-Strike in 2001, Dust has seen untold numbers of rounds played on it. Millions of players know its every nook and cranny as over the years, the map has barely changed, apart from some visual changes between the different versions of Counter-Strike.

However, this changed after a recent CS2 patch, Dust received one small special detail that will significantly change how the map is played. Valve added a new crate on the CT side which makes it much easier for a player to jump up on the boxes and get the crucial. Previously you needed a friend to crouch down and give you a lift to reach the tall box. But now you can do this yourself, meaning this is quite a significant change for solo queue players as it was always more difficult to coordinate the maneuver with other random players.

What Would this Change Entail?

While this is quite a small change, the game has been rearranged slightly in favor of the Counter-Terrorists as they can now more easily get onto the catwalk on A-site. This will have large implications in casual, ranked, and pro experiences as CTs will now have an easier time controlling the bomb site.

Despite this being a relatively small change, the CS2 community seems rather divided on the matter/ On the one hand, many players said they have been waiting for a similar change for years and generally seem happy with it as they think the map is a lot more balanced now.

However, the other side of the players seems to think the exact opposite as they think that the CTs now have a much bigger advantage. “Update makes map disbalanced. Cause now CTs have full mid control from early round, where t’s are still dependent on spawns,” one commenter said.

While these two factions are busy discussing the pros and cons of that change, there’s also a big part of the community that seems to criticize Valve for the relatively small scale of the update itself. The company has been under fire over the past couple of months for seemingly “forgetting” about Counter-Strike 2 as there have been relatively few updates since the start of 2024. “Monumental update, Valve is truly the greatest company in the history of mankind, now I can selfboost myself to short and get shot through 8 walls from Mirage to Dust2,” one player wrote.

Whatever the result of the discussion is, the update is already live and players can try out the map change themselves. However, it’s likely that the pros and hardcore CS2 players will soon develop new tactics to use the new crate on A-site, so we will see if the change will turn out to be good or bad.
