The Minecraft movie recently got a new trailer. But is what it shows promise anything better compared to the controversial teaser trailer from two months ago?

We Finally Got a Full Minecraft Movie Trailer

It is safe to say that the upcoming Minecraft movie has divided the community a lot. Even before the release of the first teaser trailer a few months ago, many fans of the game questioned the idea of even making a movie about the popular sandbox title. Films based on video games have always had a mixed reception from both critics and fans of the source material.

A couple of months ago, we got our first taste of what the Minecraft movie will look like thanks to its teaser trailer. We also gave our thoughts on the Minecraft teaser when it came out, and let’s just say that we were somewhat divided on what we saw.

However, we now finally have a full proper trailer for the upcoming movie. So does it promise anything better? That question has answers depending on what you want to see.

What Does the Minecraft Movie Trailer Show Us?

Before we give our opinion on what we expect, we should talk about what the trailer actually showed us. And surprisingly, it actually seems somewhat better than the first teaser trailer we received. For starters, we get some more information on the actual characters of the film. We understand how Steve got into the world of Minecraft and who exactly Jason Momoa’s character is. Turns out, he was the “best gamer of 1989”, hence the strange attire he’s wearing. 80’s fashion was wild it seems.

Aside from more info on the characters, we also see a lot more of the world itself. While the setting still retains the somewhat strange textures and colors that make everything seem rather “whimsical”, at least this time we got to see some actual Minecraft items. For example, there’s a scene where Steve makes a sword with the actual recipe. We also got to see the main character’s stash where he keeps various items from the game.

What’s the Community’s Reaction?

Once again, we can say that the trailer garnered a somewhat mixed reception from the community. Many players were thrilled to see the Minecraft movie use props that closely resemble in-game items. Meanwhile, others still lament the fact the film will be live-action, stating it just looks somewhat weird and uncanny.

Another thing about the film is the fact that most of the blocks don’t really have the same textures as in-game. The colors are way off, pallets look different. Perhaps the best way to describe the aesthetic of the Minecraft movie is what it’s like to play with a custom texture pack.

Of course, many prominent members of the Minecraft community also shared their opinions on the matter. Popular YouTuber Phoenix SC compared the story (as it was presented in the trailer) to Jumanji and the Super Mario Bros. movie. According to him, the story will be rather simplistic and almost “spoon-fed” to the audience.

He also pointed out how odd some things in the trailer looked. For example, he didn’t quite like the villagers and the fact they have ears. It makes them feel somewhat uncanny, and we tend to agree with that. Despite these issues, Phoenix SC praised the prop team for the detailed decors and backgrounds they have created.

One major thing that stuck with many people was some of the first words that Steve said in the Minecraft movie trailer. The “as a child, I yearned for the mines” was rather unexpected. Many fans linked it to the online joke and shitpost “the children yearn for the mines”. It’s unknown if the writers added this line intentionally or not.

Conclusions

Overall, the new Minecraft movie trailer seems somewhat promising, but also still not as good as many fans would have hoped for. The props department has definitely worked hard to recreate a lot of visuals from the game. But the fact that the team also clearly had a lot of creative liberty when it comes to aesthetics still doesn’t sit well with many. This also goes for the fact that the movie will be live-action, instead of an animation. Of course, it was not long before the community took things into their own hands and recreated the Minecraft movie trailer in various ways, such as doing it in the game itself.

Despite everything, at least it seems that the community is a little bit happier with the latest trailer, compared to the previous one. While the new video also received a ton of dislikes on YouTube, they still pale in comparison to the overwhelmingly negative response that the teaser trailer got two months ago.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see if the film will be good when it comes out on April 4 next year. For now, it’s probably best to not have huge expectations about it.
