Marvel Rivals Fans Are Furious about Map RNG

While Marvel Rivals garnered a lot of positive attention barely a week after its launch, the game’s reliance on map-based missions has irked some players.

Fans Complain About Marvel Rivals RNG

Marvel Rivals is the latest free-to-play 6v6 hero shooter that launched just recently under much fanfare. Both hardcore Marvel fans, as well as just casual players who want to try out a new game, have flocked to the NetEase title. They could enjoy a variety of characters from the popular superhero franchise battling against each other in various maps and scenarios.

The game is already hailed as not only a rival to Overwatch, the quintessential hero shooter but even a better version of it. With a ton of iconic Marvel characters to try out and fun and engaging gameplay, it’s no wonder Marvel Rivals has reached more than 480,000 concurrent players, according to Steam Charts.

Despite the game being massively popular from the get-go, it still isn’t perfect and fans have already found things to be annoyed from. One of the players that could jump into right away is the Entangled Moments event. Fans will get various rewards by completing a set of missions that are gradually introduced throughout the season.

However, some of these missions are tied to specific maps in the game.  For example, one of these is to defeat five enemies as Storm or Captain America with Thorforce’s electrifying enhancement and win three matches in Yggsgard maps. What makes things more difficult is actually getting this map when you launch a game.

That’s because maps are currently assigned at random so it’s basically pure RNG if you will be able to get the map you need for the respective mission. And even if you get the map you want, it’s still not a guarantee you will win and complete the tasks.

What Did Fans Say About This Phenomenon?

Considering how frustrating it is to rely on the game’s RNG to even be given the opportunity to complete some missions, many Marvel Rivals players went on to various forums to express their opinions. In a Reddit post, one fan complained, using a meme, that they cannot get the Hydra map they need to complete a mission. Many other fans also stated that this map is seemingly rare. “I legit don’t think I’ve seen the Hydra map once yet after like 10 hours lol,” one comment reads.

“I hate how this game gives you map-based missions, but the maps are all RNG, and it doesn’t want you to map dodge or else you get a timer,” another user wrote. “And the Hydra map seems to be EXTREMELY rare. I’ve been trying to get it for hours.”

According to some players, some maps being rarer than others is a purposeful feature. “It feels like they don’t want us to complete these missions quickly in order to keep player retention high so they lowered the map rate,” one player wrote. “All I got for the last few days was Hydra base and when missions reset yesterday I went a full 6 hours without seeing it once.”

Regardless of what the actual cause of the problem is, Marvel Rivals fans have already developed a workaround on how to get the maps they need for their missions. The way to do so is to play on Practice vs. AI and keep quitting until you get the map you want. You will not get any penalties for quitting Practice vs. AI matches, so you can just rotate games until you get the needed map. Of course, this still takes time, but at least it’s apparently faster than waiting for the right opportunity in PvP matches.
