A remake of CS 1.6 called CS: Legacy is set to release sometime this year, although some fans worry Valve might shut down the project.
What Is CS: Legacy?
It’s safe to say that Counter-Strike 1.6 is one of the most popular FPS games ever and it has turned into a modern classic. However, the franchise has long since gone past its original days from the 2000s as CS2 (and before that CS:GO and CS: Source) has become the main game. And while the newest iteration of the popular FPS series stays as true as possible to the core mechanics of the original, many players still long for the feel of the old CS 1.6 days.
However, their prayers might soon be answered as a new standalone Counter-Strike 1.6 remake is in development and is expected to hit Steam later this year, called CS:Legacy, the game is built on Valve’s official Source Engine SDK. The development team, comprised of several former CSPromod project devs, recently released an official launch trailer.
The standalone remake of CS 1.6 will be developed entirely with custom code and game assets, as stated in the trailer’s description. Although it will use the official Source engine, the developers say that they will implement significant rewrites to the renderer, shaders, and various systems.
The trailer highlights several iconic elements from Counter-Strike 1.6 that fans will recognize, such as the classic audio sounds, ragdoll animations, and a recreated version of the original Nuke and fy_poolday maps. To help fund the project, the CS: Legacy team has also launched a Patreon, offering rewards like Discord access and your name in the credits.
There Are Still Some Difficulties Ahead
Unfortunately, not everything for the project looks rosy. Many fans are worried if Valve will even allow the title to be released on their own platform. Then again, if games like Black Mesa, the fan-made remake of the original Half-Life, is on the platform, then Valve will likely allow CS: Legacy to also be featured on Steam.
However, CS: Legacy also has to compete with other projects that aim to revive the feel of old Counter-Strike 1.6. For example, Classic Offensive is a remake/mod of CS:GO. However, the Classic Offensive project has faced several setbacks. It was abruptly shut down this past January, and although it was later reinstated. But Valve blocked it again just one day before its release earlier this week, spawning the fears that we just talked about.
Ultimately, CS: Legacy looks like a cool project aiming to bring back that nostalgia from the 2000s, but upgrade it to a more modern package. Fans will still have to hope Valve gives the green light to the game, however.
