Kombatanats around the world have been enjoying Mortal Kombat 1 for nearly a year now, be it spamming fatalities, climbing the towers or grinding ranks online. And while there’s certainly hype about the game, the lack of any major MK1 announcements at this year’s EVO 2024 got fans a little worried. As we know, a fighting game’s life depends on additions of new content, be it new game modes, fighters or other features.

Well Kombatants, you need not worry anymore! Ed Boon, the Vice President and Creative Director at NetherRealm himself, has published on “X” (formerly known as Twitter) that more kontent (pun very much intended) is coming our way, which will include a new story, new fighters and big surprises. And while “big surprises” sounds ambiguous, at least we don’t have to wait for long to see them. Boon further announced that Mortal Kombat 1 will be represented at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where more information about the future of the game will be revealed.
What Can We Expect From the Reveal?

It’s no surprise that in order for any fighting game to remain successful, more content needs to be added – anything from new game modes, new characters, or an expansion. So what can we actually expect from the reveal? Judging by Ed Boon’s “X” post, it’s most likely going to be a new DLC expansion, much like Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath. Considering the lack of representation at EVO 2024, a series of new characters seems highly unlikely, as that simply won’t be enough and will likely be considered underwhelming by a large majority of the playerbase.
To further back this up, the latest reveal of Takeda most definitely shows that NetherRealm are preparing bigger and better thighs for Comic-Con. Why waste your bullets before the showdown? Don’t get me wrong, the trailer is good, it got the world buzzing about MK1 again, but that will just be the icing on the cake. If NetherRealm are willing to reveal a fan-favorite character before the big event, just imagine what they’ve got in store for us at Comic-Con. Fans are speculating about the possible inclusion of the canceled tag-team mode.
If rumors are to be believed, the new storyline continuation will feature fan-favorite ninjas Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot. If it does turn out to be true, will they turn into cyborgs again in this new timeline? Will Triborg return? So many questions… And we can’t wait to get some answers. As a reminder, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con lasts from July 25-28.
