Astralis will have to look for a new CEO as its current one and also co-founder, Nikolaj Nyholm, steps down from his position.

Nikolaj Nyholm Levaes Astralis

It’s not uncommon for players to move around quite a lot in the world of esports. However, it’s somewhat rare to see CEOs of large organizations step down from their spots. This is exactly what has happened with Astralis who announced that co-founder Nikolaj Nyholm is leaving his position.

“Nikolaj Nyholm has stepped down from the role of CEO, returning to his role as a board member of Astralis and other outside projects,” the organization’s official post on LinkedIn says. “Jakob Hansen has accepted to step in as interim CEO, previously having held the role of CFO of Astralis since November, 2019. Jakob is a strong candidate, possessing the qualifications and industry insights to operate Astralis in the upcoming period.”

It is not known why Nyholm is leaving the organization, considering the company is doing well and it seems both sides have parted amicably. Perhaps Nyholm wants to go onto other pursuits, but he has kept silent on any plans if he has such.

What Legacy Does Nyholm Leave Behind?

Being one of the most notable esports organizations in Europe, Astralis is known for its endeavors in Counter-Strike and for becoming an early adopter of the publicly-listed esports company model. Nyholm played an important part in this by founding RFRSH Entertainment back in 2016. The company, which operated the BLAST Pro Circuit, also owned Astralis. The latter split from the company in 2019 under the name Astralis Group with Nyholm taking the CEO role.

Under his guidance, Astralis went on to become one of the most successful esports companies in the world. Over the years, Astralis has won four Counter-Strike majors, among many other tournaments in various other esports titles.

Of course, this has led the company to gain a lot of income. In March 2024, the company published its 2023 financials, recording a positive EBITDA of DKK 146.7 million (about $21,6 million). Astralis further announced a DKK 72.3 million ($10.6 million) revenue for the same year.

With Nyholm gone, it’s unknown what trajectory will the company take. However, his temporary replacement, Hansen, is well-versed in the world of esports business and is a strong candidate to take the role of CEO permanently. Furthermore, with Nyholm leaving Astralis in the strong state that the company is in, it’s likely there won’t be too many problems during this transition
