We could have had a great revival of classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer, but of course, we can’t have nice things anymore.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s H2M Mod Is Officially Dead
Earlier this week, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, the 2016 remaster of Call of Duty 4, surprisingly arranged itself among the top sellers on Steam. One reason for this was because it was on sale, but a bigger one was the upcoming release of the H2M mod. This is a big community-made project aiming to recreate classic Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer in the newer remaster. What’s more, it should be available for free for any fan to download.
Well, that’s what was supposed to happen as the whole thing was shut down at the last minute. It was none other than Activision themselves who knocked on the mod’s devs’ door to put a stop to the project.
“Today, our team members received a Cease & Desist order on behalf of Activision Publishing in relation to the H2M-Mod project,” the H2M mod’s creators wrote on Twitter. “We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently.”
Unfortunately, judging by this statement, there is no hope that the mod will be revived. Along with this, the hope for a Call of Duty multiplayer experience, like the good old days, also seems to fade. What’s even more tragic is the sheer amount of content that the mod would have offered that we will now not have the chance to play. H2M not only included remasters of all the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer maps but also featured campaign levels reworked for multiplayer combat, and every Call of Duty 4 map as well. This amounts to a total of 54 maps that we will now NOT see in glorious modern graphics.
Fans Were Not Happy
Considering how much content was essentially scrapped by Activision’s decision, many Call of Duty players had a bone to pick with the company. What’s even more frustrating is that the company’s actions came so late in the development of the mod. It’s safe to say that many players bought the Modern Warfare remaster precisely because they wanted to play H2M.
Many prominent members of the Call of Duty community came out to criticize Activision for the unforeseen move. For example, Robert Bowling, a former Call of Duty creative strategist, noted on Twitter how a lot of the original Infinity Ward team were modders themselves.
The crowds of displeased fans were also joined by some popular esports players as well, FaZe Clan has often been associated with the CoD franchise, so it’s no surprise that Håvard “rain” Nygaard chimed in on the situation. Although a CS and not a CoD player, the esports pro still wrote an eloquent “You guys fucking suck man” at Activision for their decision. Considering the large amount of likes the response had, it’s a fair statement of the general mood of the community right now.
It is truly a shame that Activision had to pull the plug on the H2M mod. The project had a ton of followers and was clearly a labor of love from the devs. Not that H2M is gone for good, who knows when or even if we will ever get some good old Call of Duty: Modern Warfare gameplay.
