Doom: The Dark Ages is by far one of the most highly anticipated upcoming games. With the date for release set in the spring of 2025, many fans of the franchise still have questions about the title that remain unanswered. In this article, we will try to answer the hottest questions about the game.
When Does Doom: The Dark Ages Release and What Platforms Will It Be On?
The upcoming Doom game will be available on pretty much every major platform you can think of – PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. There have been some rumors that the title might also come to the Nintendo Switch, similar to how Doom 2016. However, there is currently no concrete evidence of that being the case. If the developers of the FPS plan to port it for the Nintendo console, it’s more likely they will wait for the release of the newly-announced Switch 2 to hit the shelves first.
For now, Doom: The Dark Ages should become available on May 15. Id Software doesn’t have a history of blasting through deadlines, so it’s likely there won’t be any delays for the upcoming FPS.
What System Requirement Does Doom: The Dark Ages Need?
While the game should run flawlessly on PS5 or Xbox, PC users with older or lower-spec machines may need to check if their computers can handle the upcoming game. Fortunately, the devs have created a handy table to help with that:

While the requirements for the new Doom game might sound a bit overwhelming, fans with older machines could still enjoy the upcoming title. As long as they have at least an Nvidia RTX 2060 Super or AMD RX 6600, they will be able to run the game at 60 FPS on low settings.
Regarding CPUs, even more mid-range options should be enough to run the game. However, if you have the recommended option, you will be able to run Doom in 4K (assuming you also have a beefy graphics card).
What’s the New Doom Game About?
The upcoming game will be a prequel to both Doom Eternal and Doom 2016. While 2016’s story served as a great intro to the revamped franchise and Eternal (especially its DLCs) finished the Slayer’s journey, Doom: The Dark Ages will reveal a lot more about his past. Its story takes place many years before these two games and follows the Slayer as he slaughters the hordes of hell that have attacked the kingdom of Argent D’Nur.
In the previous two games, we got glimpses of that kingdom from a parallel universe and how the Slayer ended up there. However, this time we will likely get way more information on what happened all those years before the Slayer returned to Earth and we’ll see how he got his iconic nickname.
What About Gameplay?
At the end of the day, Doom is an epic testosterone-fueled experience that challenges its players under the beats of an epic soundtrack. And as we’ve seen from official gameplay footage, the game should not disappoint. However, this time the player will be plunged into a more medieval-esque world that nevertheless has tons of sci-fi guns and other features not seen before in previous Doom games.
According to the devs, while Doom Eternal made players feel like a jet plane, the new game will make them feel like a tank. A key element of the gameplay is a revamped mele system that gives the player a few new weapons, such as a flail and a mace. However, the Slayer’s Shield Saw will likely be the most important piece of this system. It will allow players to, of course, rip and tear, but also block or deflect incoming attacks, throw the shield at enemies, maneuver around the map (kind of like the Supershotgun did in Eternal), and more.
Of course, guns will still be the game’s key feature, and the Slayer once again has a huge armory to choose from. However, as opposed to the more futuristic guns he used in 2016 and Eternal, now the Slayer’s weaponry feels much more medieval gothic. The weapons feel a lot more brutal, rather than high-tech. I mean, there’s literally one that crushes skulls and shoots out a ton of bone fragments!
Finally, there are mounts. Yes, you will be able to ride your very own cybernetic dragon, with a machine gun on top of it. And lastly, my personal favorite – the Atlean. Remember the big bogged-down mechs we saw throughout the previous games? Well, now you’ll get to pilot one and punch the living daylights out of demonic titans!
Conclusions
All in all, it seems that Doom: The Dark Ages promises to deliver a lot of new things with a gothic medieval/sci-fi aesthetic, while still keeping to the spirit of the dynamic gameplay fans have grown accustomed to in the last few years. There are also a ton of new features, such as the revamped melee system, and the mounts, so things should feel rather fresh as well.
In addition, we will likely learn a lot more about the mysterious kingdom of Argent D’Nur about which we’ve previously gotten just tidbits of information. And all of this will be wrapped in a more medieval-gothic aesthetic that honestly screams Quake to me. So older fans of Id’s games will likely find something quite familiar in the upcoming game, yet still have a ton of new things to experience, just like newer Doom players.
Mark your calendars for May 15 and prepare to rip and tear once again!
