Rumors say that Halo, Гears of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and more, might get PlayStation releases sometime in 2025.
Industry Insiders Theorize Halo and Others Might Come to PS
When one thinks of iconic Xbox games, Halo is one of the first to come to mind. Ever since the title made its debut with Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001, the stories of the franchise and Microsoft’s console have been interlinked. Halo games have often been seen as a flagship of Xbox, and some titles, such as the Master Chief Collection, have also been crucial in Microsoft’s PC market.
However, times seem to be changing as the tech giant might decide to share Halo, and other Xbox franchises across different platforms, including PlayStation. According to a NatetheHate podcast, Microsoft may soon release Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Sony’s platform. While it seems strange that the company might share one of the biggest symbols of Xbox gaming with its rivals, there’s more to it. According to the same podcast, Master Chief might be joined by the likes of Marcus Fenix, as the Gears of War franchise might also come to PlayStation. Besides Halo and GW, several other highly-rated Xbox titles such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, Hellblade 2, and Age of Mythology, might end up on PS4s and PS5s around the world as well.
In some previous cases, when asked about the future of Halo, Microsoft has said that nothing is fully off the table in terms of a multiplatform release. While this might still mean a PC and Xbox release, like what’s the case with Halo: MCC and Halo Infinite, the company might have also hinted at a PlayStation release. Alternatively, we might see the previously mentioned games be ported to PS5. At this point, we don’t have a 100% confirmation.
What Would This Potential Outcome Mean for the Xbox Titles?
It may seem rather strange that Microsoft might be planning to put so many of its popular Xbox games on PlayStation. Some of these titles, like Halo, have often been seen as flagship franchises of the console.
However, perhaps this is simply a case of the changing digital landscape and the further integration and connection of various services. After all, 15+ years ago, things like cross-platform play between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC users was something new and exciting. However, today most multiplayer games already come with this feature, allowing players to connect with friends, disregarding the platforms they each use.
While some purists will cringe at the idea of franchises like Halo and Gears of War played on PlayStation, I personally don’t think it’s a bad idea. Ultimately, it’s all about broadening these games’ reach and bolstering the somewhat waning player base of some of these titles. For example, Halo Infinite has even been considered a dead game as its player numbers have dwindled. It would be interesting to see if a potential PS5 release would help revitalize the FPS.
Of course, this likely isn’t Microsoft’s only goal. There’s a lot of financial incentive for the tech giant to release iconic Xbox titles on other consoles. After all, there are more PlayStations sold than Xboxes worldwide.
Ultimately, time will tell if Microsoft will make such a big move and how this will affect the gaming landscape.
