Doom Eternal is set to have a thriving modding community with the announcement of the PC Mod Preview.
Id Software Reveal Official Mod Support and Tools
The Doom franchise has the honor of being the first in many things, such as being the first FPS to have a devoted modding scene. Now, thirty years after the first game in the series, Doom Eternal continues this legacy as developer id Software has unveiled official mod support for the game on PC.
Fans first learned about this at the currently ongoing QuakeCon 2024, among many other news and updates for the franchise. Now, fans of Doom Eternal will have at their disposal a new mod browser and the release of its idStudio mod creation tools on Steam.
The so-called PC Mod Preview is only one half of id’s official mod support and is the feature that will allow players to access mods. Meanwhile, the other half of the update is specifically for mod creators, and arrives in the form of id Software’s Doom Eternal: idStudio tools. However, it should be noted that this is currently only available on Steam but it should also soon be available on the Microsoft store. A specific date for this is yet to be revealed.
How to Access Doom Eternal’s Mod Support?
By simply installing Doom Eternal’s new Update 6.66 Rev 3 beta on Steam, you will be able to browse, download, and play mods via the new PC Mod Preview. To do so, go to your Steam library, click the right mouse button while hovering over Doom Eternal, and select “Properties”. From there, find the “Betas” tab. Then, select “pc-mod-preview” from the drop-down menu, confirm your choice, and wait for the new update to install.
Unfortunately, there is no mention of this new feature being available on consoles in the future, which could mean that it will be strictly for PC players.
What Is QuakeCon?
QuakeCon is arguably the most exciting time of the year for fans of id Software’s games and not just the Doom franchise. However, it seems it’s exactly that one that is the star of this year’s iteration of the convention. Earlier this week, Bethesda released the Doom + Doom 2 remaster – an enhanced release of the two classic Doom. These come with numerous quality-of-life features, additional support for 4K resolution, 120 FPS, and even deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 gamers.
With the announcement of Doom: The Dark Ages earlier this year, which will follow the Slayer’s story before Doom 2016 and Eternal, fans have even more to look forward to. Combining this with the upcoming mod scene and the revamped classic games, Doom’s franchise looks like it will have a bright future.
